Research is one of the main missions of the faculty. The purpose of the research is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases especially found in the north of Thailand. The faculty aims to produce high impact scientific papers published in peer-reviewed international journals. The staffs perform their research in their fields of interest.

The faculty supports research work in many areas. The Research Equipment Center provides high end and sophisticated equipment such as the most up-to-date transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope and molecular medicine equipments. The Ethical Committee Office of the faculty has already been approved with international standards. The Clinical Trial Unit has been established for serving clinical trials and bioequivalent studies. The faculty also has its own peer-reviewed medical journal, the Chiang Mai Medical Journal. This journal was published the first time in the year 1958.

Collaborative research including inter-department, inter-faculty and inter-university research are promoted. The research with private sector is increased. Collaborative researchers from any part of the world are welcome. Many professors and students from many universities came to our faculty to conduct their research.

Research grants are given regularly and increasingly from both inside and outside the university. Many of our staffs have received high ranking awards from distinct organizations in Thailand and from Chiang Mai University such as Outstanding Scientist Award (Prof. Nipon Chatipakorn), Outstanding Technologist Award (Assoc. Prof. Nopporn Sittisombat) , and Senior Researcher Thailand Research Fund Award (Prof. Theera Tongsong, Prof. Wej Choochote, and Prof. Nipon Chatipakorn).
